Summer
In summer, we have different internship programs that can last between 6 and 8 weeks. These internships are full-time (except for the engineering program, which is part-time). The start dates vary depending on the program, but they usually start in mid-May and end in July.
CIEE begins to have access to student profiles in February, so companies can tell us their needs from then on.
Spring and Autumn
In spring and autumn we have a 14-week internship programme. These are part-time internships, with availability for two mornings or two afternoons (4 + 4 hours) per week (100 to 120 hours in total). Students combine their internship with other classes and activities.
Additional information about the internship program
Students complete a set number of hours depending on the program they undertake. They also participate in excursions and events organized by CIEE. During term time, some also attend classes and an internship seminar. Companies must have some flexibility to allow students to meet these commitments.
Apply for an intern
In just a few steps, at no cost and with no more paperwork than a private agreement, you can start collaborating:
-
Fill out the form or send an email to bcninternships@ciee.org. We would love to schedule a video call or in-person visit to get to know your company better.
-
This information helps us find the ideal candidate for your company. If we do not have a suitable student at the moment, we will save your details for future opportunities.
-
We meet virtually with each student to learn about their goals and desired skills. This helps us find the best candidate for your company.
-
If we find a suitable profile, we will send you their CV for your consideration. Please reply within 72 hours if you wish to arrange an interview.
-
CIEE will put you in contact with the selected students for a virtual interview. This is your opportunity to get to know the candidate better and provide details about the internship.
Please let us know your decision at the end of the interview so we can move forward with the process.
-
Once the collaboration with the student has been confirmed, the internship agreement will be digitally signed by CIEE, the supervisor and the student before starting the corresponding internship period.
-
Students undergo an initial orientation with CIEE before starting their internship. Supervisors also receive a brief online orientation prior to the start of the internship, during which they can resolve any questions.
-
At CIEE we maintain constant communication with companies and, halfway through the internship period, we follow up with you to discuss the students' progress and objectives.
We encourage supervisors to hold feedback meetings with students on an ongoing basis.
-
At the end of the internship, students must complete a student evaluation survey, which is necessary to obtain their academic credits. This survey will be sent electronically at the end of the internship.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
CIEE Barcelona reviews all CVs, identifies the three candidates that best fit the requirements of the partner company and puts them in contact with the company. From this selection, the company chooses who to interview.
-
Most students are open-minded and eager to learn, so we recommend holding an interview, even if the student's profile does not initially fit the program. If no suitable profiles are identified, new CVs would be sent and the process would be repeated. The number and variety of profiles is random, so the program may have more students in one field than in another during different periods.
-
The internship programs offered by CIEE Barcelona last between 6 and 8 weeks for the summer program or 14 weeks for the rest of the year, providing a perfect period to achieve short-term goals. From September to December and from January to May, availability is two mornings or two afternoons per week (4+4h). For summer students (from May to July) availability is from Monday to Thursday, 8 hours for business programs.
-
All expenses are covered, which means that the collaborating companies do not have to cover any costs, neither accommodation, visas, insurance, nor remuneration. In addition, they are exempt from Social Security.
-
Yes, companies can participate in several internship programs throughout the year. CIEE Barcelona can provide new interns three times a year during the spring, summer and fall programs, allowing companies to stay on track with their projects. These programs start in January, May and September, respectively.
-
Yes, companies can have different profiles of interns depending on their needs as long as they can provide them with a suitable workplace, guidance and support.
-
CIEE students undertake unpaid academic internships for which they obtain credits at their home universities.
-
CIEE Barcelona offers assistance in the selection of suitable candidates, covering the costs and thus reducing the paperwork for the collaborating companies. The internship coordination team maintains continuous communication with the companies to resolve any queries or problems that may arise.
-
In order to be eligible to host an intern, companies must be able to offer the student a workplace and guidance in English.
The legal form of the company does not limit its eligibility. It can be a multinational, a medium-sized company, a startup, an entrepreneur or an association.
-
Some students have a good level of Spanish, either due to their family background or their academic studies. Others come with very little or no knowledge, looking to improve their language skills and immerse themselves in a foreign-speaking environment, fostering personal and professional growth. If it is a requirement for the position, we will make sure to select profiles with a good level of Spanish.
-
Most of our students are in their second or third year of university, so they will return to their home universities after the internship programme to finish their degrees. In the case of wanting to maintain a subsequent collaboration with the student, it is an agreement between the company and the student and CIEE will not be involved in this agreement.
